Tall Buildings
Timeline
Using 100 meters as a height threshold, this animated map explores how quickly tall buildings have proliferated across the globe, starting with North America in the first half of the 20th century and rapidly expanding outward. As of August 2024, CTBUH has cataloged over 15,000 such buildings.1
Tall Buildings in Select Urban Areas
Urban agglomerations have grown vertically at uneven paces, influenced by external forces such as geopolitics, economic conditions, and migration patterns over time. While legacy tall cities such as New York City and Chicago have steadily grown over the past century, emergent tall cities in Asia and the Middle East have seen rapid and unprecedented construction over the last 20 years. As we look towards 2030, Anglosphere cities such as Toronto, London, Sydney, and Brisbane are expected to have the largest growth in tall buildings.
